Nea Michaniona is famous for the largest medium fishing fleet in Greece (the installation of the fish market in 1998, made it a center of administration and marketing of fish and shellfish in all of Northern Greece) and for the Merchant Navy Academy (since 1968) which provides well-trained officers in Greek and not only Greek shipping. Despite its tourist development, it has largely retained the characteristics of a traditional village. So when the sun goes down the central square is filled with people who stroll around, enjoying the famous traditional “loukouma” of Michaniona in one of the cafes located above the fish market and the picturesque harbor or tasting the fresh fish overlooking the endless blue.
